The Ethiopian Railways Corporation (ERC) and Italian company COIPA Italia recently signed a framework agreement. Establishing strategic cooperation on railway modernization and the restart of the Awash-Komborcha Railway Project. The signing of this framework agreement has injected new momentum into the project’s restart and created new opportunities for Ethiopia’s railway modernization.

The two parties will jointly promote the application of European railway safety, quality, and efficiency standards in Ethiopia. Conduct technology transfer and talent training, and expand regional railway cooperation. thereby contributing to Ethiopia’s development into a transportation hub for East and Central Africa.
Italy’s COIPA stated that it will focus on supporting the repair and reconstruction of the 270-kilometer Awash-Komborcha Railway Project section, a crucial component of the Awash-Haragbeya Railway. Since the beginning of this year, ERC has actively sought international cooperation to promote the restart of the project.

The CEO of ERC stated that this collaboration is an important step in strengthening Ethiopia’s railway infrastructure and introducing European engineering and technical expertise. The CEO of Italy’s COIPA noted that the collaboration will provide technology transfer, expertise, and investment opportunities. And enhance ERC’s institutional and management capabilities. Supporting the sustainable development of Ethiopia’s transportation system and creating long-term value for local communities. The Italian Ambassador to Ethiopia emphasized that this is not only a business cooperation. But also a symbol of friendship between Ethiopia and Italy.
