Construction commencement order issued for the ground section of the Santiago-Baturco railway in Chile undertaken by a Chinese company

On October 28th local time, Chilean National Railways (EFE) officially launched the ground section of the Santiago-Baturco railway by issuing a commencement order. This major project which represents an investment of over US$470 million. now moves into its construction phase. Notably, the contract stands as the largest single project ever awarded by Chilean National Railways. The Greater Andes Construction Consortium—comprising China Railway Construction Corporation. China Railway 22nd Bureau Group, and China Railway Electrification Bureau—won this significant contract. Their scope of work includes building six new stations. along with supporting bridges and grade-separated transport facilities along the Mapocho-Baturco section. Furthermore, the completed line will provide direct transfers to Santiago Metro Lines 3, 5, and 7.

The Santiago-Batúco railway’s 24-kilometer surface section forms a critical part of the broader “Chilean Railway Plan.” Key project components involve constructing a new passenger railway line between Quintanomar. and Batúco in the Santiago Region. as well as repairing and upgrading the existing freight railway line. Altogether, the plan calls for six new stations. five level crossings. and six railway bridges. The passenger line will support speeds of up to 160 km/h. while the freight line is designed for 65 km/h.

Strategic significance and the role of Chinese enterprises

Once finished, the railway will effectively link five cities within the Santiago Metropolitan Region. It is also expected to serve 35 million passengers each year. with a total travel time of just 24 minutes. On August 25th local time, Santiago hosted the signing ceremony for the surface section of the Santiago-Baturco railway.

According to China Railway Construction Corporation, the project offers Chinese firms a valuable opportunity to integrate railway construction, rolling stock manufacturing. and maintenance services within Chile. As a result, it will help drive the adoption of Chinese technology, standards, and equipment across the Latin American railway market. Ultimately, this project supports the “going global” strategy for China’s entire railway industry chain in Latin America.
