Descriptionof Gauge Plate
Gauge Plate is a key component in the rail fastening system. It is usually installed between the rails and the sleepers to fix the position of the rails and maintain the gauge (the distance between the inner sides of the two rails). It is mostly made of nylon or composite materials with high wear resistance and compressive strength.
Function of Gauge Plate
- Maintaining the stability of the gauge: The gauge plate ensures the correct position of the rail in the lateral direction (left and right direction) through its specific thickness and shape, preventing the gauge from expanding or shrinking due to train load or temperature changes.
- Transmitting lateral forces: When a train passes, lateral forces (such as centrifugal force and wheel-rail interaction force) are generated. The gauge plate can disperse these forces to the sleepers and the roadbed to reduce the lateral displacement of the rails.
- Adjusting the gauge: By replacing gauge plates of different thicknesses, the gauge can be fine-tuned (for example, when the gauge needs to be appropriately widened in a curved section).
- Cooperating with elastic fasteners: In modern rail fastening systems, gauge plates are often used in conjunction with elastic fasteners (such as spring bars, bolts, etc.), which not only ensure the tightness of the rails, but also allow a certain elastic deformation to buffer vibration.
- Insulation function: On electrified railways or sections with track circuits, some gauge baffles are made of insulating materials (such as nylon or composite materials) to prevent current leakage and ensure the normal operation of the signal system.
